Shingles Vaccine – Zostavax
There has been a great deal of advertising about the shingles vaccine alongside the flu vaccine advertising. This vaccine is not FUNDED. The cost is around $230
Zostavax is indicated for:
- Prevention of herpes zoster (Shingles)
- Prevention of postherpetic neuralgia
- Reduction of acute and chronic zoster-associated pain
This vaccine is only licensed for adults from the age of 50 years. It is not for children! The duration of protection beyond 4 years after vaccination with Zostavax is unknown. The need for revaccination has not been defined. The effectiveness of the vaccine reduces as you age.
If you are interested in this vaccine please make an appointment to discuss with your doctor.
We do advise you to read further up on the vaccine and the studies conducted at the different ages. http://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/vpd-vac/shingles/vacc-need-know.htm.
Zostavax may not be of benefit for all patients and your doctor’s consent is required for the nurse to order it in for you.
