Born 1956 in Hawkes Bay, Richard studied medicine at Otago, and Christchurch Medical Schools, before spending 2 years working in London. Whilst in the UK, he gained a Diploma in Child Health, then returned to Christchurch to study General Practice for one year. He studied for and sat Diploma of Obstetrics in Auckland in 1984, a diploma which includes gynaecology.

Peripheral to General Practice, Richard has been chairman of Shorecare, a Director of Comprehensive Health, and Continuing Education coordinator for North Harbour GPs.
He is married with 3 children and when he gets the chance enjoys gardening, tramping, skiing and native forest restoration.

As of April 2020  – Dr Richard Hursthouse has sold his practice to Dr Rick Barber and finished at Browns Bay Medical Centre on Friday 3 April 2020. He does not intend to retire from medicine just yet and he will be working in the practice here as a locum from time to time. As many of you know Dr Richard Hursthouse is involved in a number of conservation initiatives both locally and nationally which he will be continuing to devote his time to.

Richard has been a partner at Browns Bay Medical Centre since 1985. During that time BBMC has moved premises twice and we are all delighted to now be firmly established in our wonderful new facility. The BBMC team is very special. It has been Dr Richard Hursthouse’s pleasure and an honour to work with this passionate team to deliver quality medical care and to be able to leave his patients’  medical care in Dr Rick Barber and the BBMC team’s expert hands.
